What the press say
Northern Diver Pocket Weight Belt.
The most common cause of losing a weight belt underwater is the buckle coming loose or being released accidentally. This often occurs when divers are hauling themselves back onto a RIB with no harm to the diver except to his or her wallet.
However, it can also happen if the buckle or tailing webbing gets caught on wreckage or in kelp, for instance. In this situation, the consequences may be more serious.
Northern Diver has developed an ingenious weight belt to help minimise the risk of this scenario. On the face of it, it appears to be just another pouch belt with the capacity to hold up to six 2kg weights. However, the webbing that slides through the buckle has velcro attached to either side. This webbing is retained under the first pouch, securing it in place. It is almost impossible for the end to get snagged, and if the buckle is accidentally released, the belt won't come loose.
To jettison the belt, the pouch needs to be opened as well as the buckle, but in practise this is a relatively simple operation. The only slight downside is that it is harder to thread the Velcro-covered webbing through the buckle. My recommendation would be that the next version should have a toggle or loop attached to the first pouch, making it even easier to release in an emergency.
The belt comes with a rubberised inner lining that helps to prevent slippage, and each pouch has a mesh bag that can be filled with lead shot rather than using moulded weights.
