World Oceans Day 2020

One Ocean Connecting Us All

As we celebrate World Oceans Day, it’s impossible not to dwell on the fact we’re doing so in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Very rarely does something come along that unites the world so much for a common cause. While different countries have responded, and been horrendously affected, in different ways we’re all facing the same challenge which is to overcome this virus and slowly move into a new 'normal'.

Everyone is feeling the effects of being separated from loved ones and conscious of the restrictions that still prevent us from the travel we’d become accustom to. The world, which has been getting smaller for centuries, has suddenly become bigger and more divided. It’s ironic that this virus is connecting us all but also keeping us apart.

You could think about our ocean's in the same way. The ocean stands between numerous nations and forms a huge barrier, keeping us apart, but also connects those who share it. We all rely on the health of that one ocean for our shared well-being.

We tend to look at the world from our own perspective but, of course, there are many that see things differently. From human adventurers who have, and still do, make the ocean a temporary home, to the migrating animals that connect the dots of the land around their permanent oceanic world. For them the ocean is one space with no borders and no barriers. What we do to one part of the ocean affects what happens in another.

There are no borders, no barriers. What we do to one part of the ocean affects what happens in another.

The ocean belongs to us all. We all put in and take out so we have to act collectively. We’ll all suffer if we fail and we’ll all benefit if we succeed. Only by nations acting together can we restore and gradually maintain the health of our oceans.

Only by nations acting together can we restore and gradually maintain the health of our oceans.

This years #worldoceansday focuses on the growing innovation for a sustainable ocean and everyone here at Northern Diver is 100% supportive and behind this motive!
