How did Stand-up Paddle boarding begin?
An offshoot of surfing stand up paddle surfing and stand up paddle boarding (SUP) began in Hawaii.
Usually in surfing, a rider sits on their board until a wave comes, a stand-up paddle boarder on the other hand uses an oar to propel themselves through the water. It started to catch on in the US in 2013 and soon transferred to the UK and then to the rest of the World. Since then SUP has sprouted popular offshoots such as paddle-board yoga, SUP fishing, whitewater SUP (paddling in river rapids), SUP surfing, stand-up paddle board racing and flat water paddling.
Depending on where around the World you paddle board will determine the temperature of the air and water. This will in turn decide if you wear a wetsuit and its thickness or if you choose alternative clothing. Remember, most of your time will be spent out of the water, standing on your board (especially as you practice and get better).
Traditionally performance surf boards were made from foam cores covered by layers of laminate. Because SUP boards are longer than a standard surf board, it's more difficult to travel with them. We've developed a range of inflatable paddle boards so they better support the lifestyle of the SUP user. You can easily travel with your inflatable board because it and an accompanying pump can fit snugly into a backpack, making them incredibly mobile. The core of our boards is made from 'drop stitch' nylon, these thousands of locked nylon stitches keep the board at their required thickness. Due to the pressure that our boards can contain, the resulting inflatable paddle board is almost as rigid as a hard board. We're proud to bring you our Aquarious series of inflatable paddle boards because they're both transportable and durable.
Northern Diver's range of Aquarious inflatable stand-up paddle boards (iSUPs) are ideal for a range of paddle board applications.
SUPs and used for a variety of applications and our Aquarious boards are designed to support an all-round use approach. All our Northern Diver Aquarious boards have three surfboard-style fins in the stern for tracking.
SUP Touring & Leisure Paddling
The idea of paddle boarding on flat-water began to gain popularity in 2007, by 2008 boards designed specifically for touring started to become available. The majority of touring SUPs have a displacement hull (pointed nose/ bow), however, our iSUPs have a flat and wide planing hull, like a surfboard. We chose this design because, like a surfboard this design means the board rides on top of the water and is incredibly manoeuvrable. This makes it an ideal design for leisure paddling, surfing, SUP yoga and whitewater SUP. Like many touring boards, the Aquarious range include deck rigging so you can easily and securely carry your gear.
Some people favour the displacement hull because it enables the board to glide and track in the way a kayak or canoe would. While this design enables you to move faster over longer distances, it does make the board less manoeuvrable.
SUP Yoga developed from Nikki Gregg doing Pilates and fitness workouts on stand up boards. Gillian Gibree and Sarah Tiefenthaler took this a step further by diversifying their yoga classes and bringing them to water on their stand-up paddle boards. The planing hull of our boards combined with the EVA anti-skid deck pad make the Aquarious the ideal iSUPs for you to enjoy a spot of yoga.
The Aquarious range are the ideal size and design to take on rapids. If you want to take a SUP across whitewater, a board between 10-12 foot with a planing hull is the perfect option - so look no further than the Northern Diver Aquarious iSUPs. If you are going to be whitewater SUP'ing, make sure that you also look at our range of helmets and PFDs so you stay nice and safe in choppy waters.
